A Sunday on Long Island's Gold Coast

On Sunday, June 8, The Beaux Arts Alliance invites you for a tour of one of America's grandest locales: Long Island's Gold Coast, a fabled place of legendary moguls, stunning mansions, and spectacular scenery. The tour will be conducted by David Garrard Lowe. Transportation will be by private motor coach and will depart from in front of the Beaux Arts office, 119 East 74th Street, at 8:00 a.m.

The tour's first destination will be Sagamore Hill, the picturesque country house built by President Theodore Roosevelt in the 1880s. With its broad lawns, wide verandas, and rooms tilled with "Teddy's" books, furniture, and hunting trophies, the house embodies the zest for life of one of America's most popular Presidents.

The tour will then move on to Coe Hall, situated in the magnificent 409-acre Planting Fields Arboretum with its great collection of rare trees and shrubs. The impressive Tudor style mansion designed by the noted firm of Walker & Gillette was the home of the prominent insurance broker, William Coe. The 65-room mansion is noted for its important collection of antique chandeliers and mantelpieces, and l7th century oak furniture imported from England.

Lunch will be taken at an English style pub in Oyster Bay. Afterward the tour will visit Eagle's Nest, the delightful Spanish-Revival palace designed by Whitney Warren for William K. Vanderbilt II. The 24 rooms of Eagle's Nest are celebrated for their fine furniture, paintings, and rare ceramics. There are also intriguing exhibits reflecting Mr. Vanderbilt's journeys around the globe. The exotic mansion is famous for its splendid views over Long Island Sound.
